You arrive with your trainer/instructor 5 minutes before the test is due to start. The waiting room has a number of desks where you can set out your papers ready for inspection [theory pass certificate, plastic and paper part of your licence].
Then the moment arrives when the examiner enters the room and your name is called, you make yourself known to the examiner and guide them to where your papers are placed.
While the examiner checks your papers they ask you to sign what will be your driving assessment report to declare that you are a resident in the UK and your car is correctly taxed and insured.
You will then be asked to make your way to your car. On the way out of the test centre the examiner will tell you their name and ask you what you prefer to be called .Once outside the examiner will ask you to read the number plate of a car about 20m away this is checking that the eyesight requirements have been met, you are allowed to wear your glasses.
Weather conditions permitting you will have to lift the bonnet and identify
The engine coolant reservoir
Brake fluid reservoir
Windscreen washer bottle
Engine oil dipstick
Oil filler cap
This is all part of what is called show me tell me- itís not anything difficult and all the questions can be downloaded prior to your test.
Now letís talk you through a scenario of the start
seat belt on, mirrors checked, engine on, prepare to go, shoulder check, let the car roll gently forward turning left out of the parking bay then turn right, then left- itís a tight car park so leave it in first ,as you approach the exit of the car park- itís that routine MSM peep and creep -visibility isnít good as there are cars parked on the right and left of the exit. Weíre off checking the mirrors again as we enter the new road, match the gear with the speed of the car.
ďAt the end of the road turn rightĒ
MSM approach with care with a bit of luck it wonít be too busy and the junction is fairly open , you might be able to keep the car moving- great, itís clear, a smooth start! In the new road check the rear view mirror then looking ahead you can see a set of lights if they are on green donít race towards them, they might change- be prepared for this. Yes, as you thought the lights have gone back to red, check your mirrors and adjust your speed- look thereís no cars at the other side of the bridge, the lights immediately will change back to green, youíve managed to keep the car rolling and got off to a great start.
Keep checking those mirrors
Look speed bumps- not to worry keep the car at a speed that is appropriate but donít hold up the traffic up by going too slow .
ď take the next road on the left ď
Mirror check , signal
, manoeuvre get back into second gear and make note of the signs your going into a 20 Zone ..... ring Leigh at iDrive or to get more details.
